Hula Dance and the Appreciation of Nature

Outdoors in Japanese Garden

Sunday October 10, 2010
12 noon - 1:00 pm

Hawaiian Hula Dancing is alive and well in Oak Park! Hula is a traditional dance form of the Hawaiian people that can help us appreciate the beauty, grace and healing powers of nature. The dance has two components: ancient and modern and both tell stories about Hawaiian culture, relationships and beautiful surroundings in nature. The chants and dances honor the gods/goddesses, their family, their homes, and their leaders in rhythmic chants accompanied by the beating of gourds and drums.

An authentic Pa Hula mound was built especially for Hula at the Zen Life & Meditation Center’s Japanese Garden. It is a raised grass structure with a retaining wall of 30,000 pounds of blue stone rock, each one cut and hand placed to build a beautiful yin yang form in the middle of the garden.

The afternoon will include a performance on the hula mound and a class that will teach participants a simple hula on the mound.

Halau I Ka Pono (place that cultivates the goodness) is a new Hula School in Chicago based in Oak Park. Its purpose is to teach the culture of Hawaii through the joy of dance. Kumu Hula/master teacher of the hula, June Kaililani Tanoue is the founder and teacher.
